Looking for an alternative to the sandbag
In the event of high water or flooding, sandbags are still very often used. They are easy to use, suitable for many different applications and on different surfaces (paved, unpaved) and they are relatively cheap.
However, there are also disadvantages: working with sandbags is heavy and takes a relatively long time and cleaning up can be problematic.
Within the theme of crisis management one of our partner organisations from the Netherlands, STOWA is looking for an alternative to the sandbag.
Cooperation with research results and academia
On April 10 this year STOWA hosted a symposium together with the Technical University of Delft about mobile barriers. In the afternoon, the participants visited a test site for mobile barriers in Delft, Flood Proof Holland, where 8 mobile barriers were demonstrated by the manufacturers.

Mobile barriers
A mobile barrier is a barrier that can be built at different locations, where necessary. This is different from a temporary barrier, which is located at a fixed location. For more information visit our partners website:
Conditions for mobile barriers
In order to consider the use and application of this type of flood crisis management, several questions have to be adressed:
- What type is currently on the market?
- Within which boundary conditions can these be used (retaining height, surface, construction time, etc.)?
