Understanding information about flash floods and heavy rains
Crisis managers and employees at waterboards have access to a number of information about the mere phenomenum of heavy rainfalls and their aftermaths. Properly understand this information and being trained to make use of it is a key aspect to act properly in case of emergency.
Therefore, as part of the training scheme developed by the FlashFloodBreaker partners, the German Waterboards Emschergenossenschaft (EG) and Lippeverband (LV) have developed a series of teaching materials.

Employees of EG and LV can use the videos for self-study. In addition, some topic blocks contain exercises to reinforce and apply the content taught.
The series of teaching materials focus on four key topics:
How to read maps
Flood hazard maps, flood risk maps and heavy rain hazard maps
Different specific warning systems
Flood information and warnings within the EG and LV
HOWIS
The flood information system of EG and LV
A - Z of flooding
Terms related to flooding
Roadmap Crisis Flood
Next to the internal use, the teaching materials will also be shared with regional crisis managers from authorities such as the fire department and water/ environmental sector.
This will help external partners in crisis management to understand and make use of the publicly available flood information as well as the specific ones provided by EG and LV and strongly facilitates the joint cooperation during extreme flash flood events.
Strengthen the training of employees involved in crisis management support the implementation of the Roadmap Krisenhochwasser (Roadmap Crisis Flood) for the Emscher-Lippe region.
