Resilient Heritage

Heritage in heavy weather

In summer 2021, heavy rainfalls lead to several flash flood events in different regions of North-West Europe. In the province of Limburg in the Netherlands, not only ordinary citizens were affected by flash floods. Cultural institutions such as museums suffered severe damage as well.

Resilient heritage

Our partner Waterveiligheid en Ruimte Limburg (WRL), in cooperation with cultural network organization Huis voor de Kunsten Limburg, organised a meeting for heritage institutions on Thursday January 23rd 2025.

In a varied programme of lectures, an information market and workshops, participants received practical information and tools to better prepare for floods.

Plans & posters

In collaboration with the sector, WRL has previously developed contingency plans. This event looked at how to make this advice even more concrete and applicable. To this end, a new poster was presented by executives of our partner organisations. This way, employees and volunteers can see at a glance what they need to do when the water flows in.

Information market

On the information market, various organisations from the heritage sector disposed their expertise, focusing on themes like prevention and reservation, art depose, art handling, and transportation. Visitors could gather information here according to their personal preferences.

Workshops

In various workshops, topics like a ‘first aid plan’ for the collection (prioritisation of art in case of an evacuation, list of things you need to do), the legal aspects of insurance, and art handling (once the water hits the museum) were discussed. Here there was plenty of opportunity to get to work and learn from both the practice and each other.
